Without an IP address, you will not be able to connect to the Internet. To check and see if you have an IP address, choose the operating system you are using and follow the steps below:

Windows NT/2000/XP:
Click on the "Start Menu" and select "Run." Type "cmd" in the dialog box and click "OK" or press <Enter>. A command prompt will then appear that looks similar to an MS-DOS prompt.

Type in "ipconfig" to see if you have an IP address. If you see an IP address that begins with 169.254, you have the auto-configuration address and it is not valid.

If you do not have a valid IP address, then type in "ipconfig /release" (without the quotes) and press <Enter>, then type "ipconfig /renew" and press <Enter>.

If you receive an error message saying, "No adapters bound to TCP/IP are enabled for DHCP," then a static IP address is specified.

If you receive an error message that says, "DHCP server unavailable" or "DHCP server unreachable," the Ethernet cable is most likely bad and should be replaced.

For Macintosh:
On a Macintosh, you have to make sure that the TCP/IP control panel is set to use Ethernet. To do so, follow the directions below.

To access the TCP/IP control panel, first click on the Apple icon, select "Control Panels," and then click on "TCP/IP." You should see a window that looks like this:

Make sure that the "Connect via:" option is set to "Ethernet" or "Ethernet built-in," as shown above. Also check to make sure that "Configure:" is set to "Using DHCP Server." Once you verify these settings, close the window and save the settings when prompted. To finish the connection process, open a Web browser and type in the URL of a public Web site ( www.yahoo.com). If you see the SedTech Welcome Page, you have connected successfully.

Windows 95/98/ME:
To verify that you have an IP address, run the 'winipcfg' utility. To do this, click on the "Start Menu" and select "Run." At the "Run" prompt, type "winipcfg" in the dialog box. Then press <Enter> or click "OK."

You should then see a window that looks like this:

Select the Ethernet Card that is installed in the computer from the dropdown menu at the top. Check the field labeled "IP Address" and make sure that it contains a valid IP Address. If you see an IP address that begins with 169.254, you have the auto-configuration address and it is not valid. If there is not a valid IP address, then click on the "Release" button; this will clear the values. Now click on "Renew." The computer should then obtain an IP address for the computer and list it in this field.
